People in our lab: Ben Werling

Research interests: I am broadly interested in examining the nature and ecological implications of the myriad of interactions that occur between plants, insects and their natural enemies. I am especially interested in how ecological interactions in different habitats are linked across landscapes via insect dispersal. Many of these interactions (e.g., pest suppression and pollination) produce ecosystem services that are invaluable to humans.

Currently, I am conducting research with a team of scientists from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center to determine how rates of these services might be affected by increased biofuel production. Our goal is to provide a “voice” for these often undervalued services, enabling them to be considered as we make decisions about biofuels that will impact our landscapes.  This work provides an exciting opportunity to use science to secure a better environment for future generations.

I am also interested in engaging students in the classroom with the fascinating world of insects and developing curricula that challenge students and help them develop the skills they need to succeed in their careers.
